Georges-Louis Leclerc, Count of Buffon (1707-1788) was a French naturalist, mathematician, and cosmologist. Buffon published thirty-six quarto volumes of his most well-known work, Histoire Naturelle. Original delightful engravings from the 1853 edition featuring L'oiseau-Mouch Améthyste (Amethyst Hummingbird), Rubis Topaze (Ruby Topaz), Huppe-col (Crested Collar), Le Petit Oiseau-mouche et son Nid (the Little Hummingbird and its nest), Le Oiseau-mouche rubis (Ruby Hummingbird), and Le Oiseau-mouche À Raquette (the Snowshoe Hummingbird).
