An exceptional large cork-work diorama of Gripsholm Castle. Mid-19th century, circa 1850. In remarkable condition. This is a highly detailed antique cork picture of Gripsholm Castle in Sweden. Bearing an old label stating: ''This remarkable specimen was bought in Brighton January 1918. It was in a cork frame and was evidently at least sixty years old. On the frame was the name of this picture as below GRIPSHOLM''. Measures: W 3’3” (100 cm) H 2’8” (82 cm) D 6” (15 cm). Refs: Gripsholm Castle is a castle in Mariefred, Södermanland, located by Lake Mälaren in south central Sweden, in the municipality of Strängnäs, about 60 km west of Stockholm. Gripsholm Castle has belonged to the Swedish Royal Family and was used as one of their residences until the 18th century. It is now a museum, but it is still considered to be a palace at the disposal of the King and as such it remains part of the Swedish Crown Estates.
