Round Frame Hand Carved and gilded with pure gold leaves
Dimensions: Outer diameter 122 cm - Inner diameter 82 cm - thickness 14 cm
In excelent condition.
Beautiful round frame with central festoon carving with leaves, buds, and fruits in relief, abutment frame with recurring stylized leaves, another frame with lanceolate leaves alternating with a central pearl. The frame is in excellent condition and has only some signs of wear on the gilding. Also noteworthy is the perfect conservation of the structure behind it.
This type of frame, also called "tondo" clearly influenced by Della Robbia, was frequently used in the 16th century to frame the most precious and important paintings and portraits from the collections of Florentine noble families, today exhibited in the most important museums of the world.
Just to name one, the most famous, the "Tondo Doni" painted by Michelangelo and preserved in the Uffizi Gallery.
Italy was the center of frame making during the Renaissance and Italian frames came to be known for their Fine craftsmanship and artistic beauty. The first frames were made for use in a religious context and tabernacle or aedicular frames were created for altarpieces. Molding frames were introduced for secular purposes in the 15th century and marked the beginning of framing as we know it today. The design of the cassetta, or “little box” frame, comprised of a flat panel or frieze with applied raised inner and outer moldings, would continue to be used throughout frame history.
