About the Item
Limited edition Mid-Century Modern multi-colored porcelain wall plaque, tile painting by Swedish surrealist artist Max Walter Svanberg, (1912-1994). Designed for Swedish Rörstrand in the 1970s. Artist's signature on the back including description of the motif: "Illusionary conception while the sealed daughters of the sun unfold the sea's billowing swell". Signature on the front. Beautiful vintage condition.
Max Walter Svanberg was a Swedish surrealist painter, illustrator and designer. From a young age, Svanberg was inspired by flora, fauna and the female body - he began sculpting women torsos when he was 10 years old. In 1946, he created the expression "Imaginism", and his group Imaginisterne (The Imaginists) became the Swedish branch of the Cobra art movement.
