Midcentury Blue & Green Ceramic Wall Cross, Jesus INRI, Handmade in Europe

About the Item

This blue-green ceramic wall cross, handcrafted in Europe by a Studio Pottery artist, blends modernist aesthetics and traditional iconography. The cross features a wide body with short wings, adorned with a modernist depiction of Jesus Christ. Above Christ's figure, the tall and narrow INRI inscription adds to the solemnity of the piece. This wall cross marries elements of modernism with the iconography found in Gothic churches, resulting in an aesthetic that is both modern and respectful of religious tradition. Its essence lies in its ability to evoke a sense of reverence while embodying the modernity of the midcentury period. Our European cross collection (Tradition & Modernism) is composed of one-of-a-kind, handcrafted pieces made by Studio Pottery artists from the 1950s to 1970s. They show a range of diverse styles, from modernism to brutalism. Each artist has taken a unique approach to depict faith through the language of art and the medium of ceramics. This large collection offers an opportunity to curate a custom wall of modernist crucifixes, and appeals to those who appreciate the symbolism and beauty of religious artifacts.
