A pair of silhouettes, head and shoulders of a man in coat ask wearing glasses and a woman in a dress and bonnet, hand cut in black paper, heightened in gold. Framed in uniform gilt frames.
British, late 19th century
12.5cm H, 10cm W the frames.
Silhouettes offered a quick and affordable alternative to oil portraits, when photography had yet to be invented. These paper cut silhouettes are hand cut in paper with small pair scissors, the attention to detail is exceptional. These examples are further coloured to add detail, many are simply a silhouette outline.
