From his earliest years he was moved to conceive and communicate the grace he saw in the world through art. Born in Leeds, England in 1953, he blossomed creatively at an early age under the tutelage of his artist mother, Christine, first exhibiting his work in school at age 11. At 17 he left school to study etching at the Chelsea School of Art, then to Brighton College of Art where he took an Honors Degree in Fine Art in 1975. Stephen spent the next four years in Switzerland and England working as an artist, teacher and graphic designer. Stephan Whittle, 1953 – 2000. Born in England, Whittle studied etching at Chelsea School of Art and Brighton College of Art. He worked as an artist, teacher and graphic designer in Switzerland and England, exhibiting in galleries in Great Britain. His view of nature as a place of harmony and balance was expressed in his early etchings. His sense of color and rhythmic, flowing composition creates remarkable miniature worlds on copper plates. Working with publishers such as London Contemporary Art and CCA Galleries, his florals and landscape scenes gained popularity in Japan, Australia and North America. He exhibited at art shows in Tokyo, New York, Paris and Frankfurt. Whittle moved to America with his wife and two children. His used brighter colors and larger pieces, and developed a method of embossing designs around the border of the etched images. He etched a series depicting vineyards and wine related themes. In 1979 Stephen came back full time to the complex medium that he would make his own. He was drawn to express his vision through two venerable English artistic traditions: the “English Landscape” and the craft of etching. Largely self-taught, Stephen established his etching studio in Lancashire in 1980, with the help of his father, Donald, who bought his first etching press. He was drawn to the harmony and balance of the natural world, and this was (and would remain) the subject of much of his etching work. He received encouragement from Robin Tanner, the distinguished English etcher who in his turn worked in the pastoral tradition of the great Samuel Palmer. In 1981, Stephen had his first exhibition in London at the Drian Galleries and was commissioned by Christies Contemporary Art to do a series of etchings with pastoral themes. His work quickly gained a following, and throughout the 1980s and 1990s Stephen worked with major art publishers and exhibited in art shows in London, Tokyo, New York, Paris and Frankfurt. He has had one-man or group shows in a total of fourteen countries and is held in both corporate and private collections worldwide. In 1992 Stephen moved with his family to the United States, first to Fairfield, Iowa and in 1997 to Sonoma County in California. Taking inspiration from his new environment, Stephen expanded his subjects to include vineyard, ocean and domestic settings as well as the English countryside. In his last years he began to expand his medium into painting and mixed media and his subject matter took on a more visionary tone. Stephen Whittle took the traditional art of etching and fashioned it into something both fresh and familiar. Each creation is an intricate, intimate world of beauty that beckons us to enter and rest for a timeless moment of tranquility. Stephen’s deep sense of spirituality was expressed through his desire to create beauty and harmony and share it with others. His own words speak most clearly of his vision and aim: “The transcendent, spiritual dimension of ‘vision’ allows me to interpret what I see on a feeling level. Many of my pieces begin as simple rhythmic shapes, moving to achieve a kind of fluid harmony. Then I begin to bend the natural world around this design. Color plays a crucial part, as if adding music to a world that was so far silent. Altogether I seek to create both a feast for the senses and an image that will resonate somewhere deep within the soul.”

About James Rizzi: AMERICAN, 1950-2011 James Rizzi (October 5, 1950 – December 26, 2011) was an American pop artist who was born and raised in Brooklyn, New York. Best known for his vibrant, youthful graphics and his three-dimensional prints. He was the official artist for the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta, adorning the famous logo with his noodle-like drawing style. Rizzi was most famous for his 3D artwork, "especially the large, elaborate prints and teeming anthropomorphic cityscapes. His merry maximalism and delight in delirious detail and elaborate minutiae created a true art brand, a trademark style as recognizable as any in the world." About Rosenthal: German porcelain manufactory Rosenthal was originally founded as a ceramics-painting studio by Philipp Rosenthal Sr. (1855-1937) in 1879 at Schloss Erkersreuth in Bavaria, near the Czech border. Its first highly popular product was an ashtray inscribed with the words “Resting place for lit cigars.” In 1890, the company moved to the neighboring hamlet of Selb and, a year later, began to manufacture its own porcelain, since white porcelain was, at that time, in short supply. Rosenthal’s first complete table service was called Empire; it was exhibited along with other lines at Paris’s Exposition Universelle in 1900. With the dawn of the 20th century, Rosenthal began producing porcelain tableware and services formed and decorated in the latest styles, like the Jugendstil Botticelli (1903), the Art Nouveau Darmstadt (1905), and the all-white Maria (1916) lines. Successes with this au courant approach led the company to launch an art pottery division in 1910, dedicated to luxury tableware, vases, and other decorative objects. By the 1930s, figurines were another important Rosenthal product, most notably the Disney-licensed Mickey Mouse pieces introduced in 1931. In 1934, Philipp Rosenthal was forced to leave his company and country when his Jewish ancestry came under persecution by the Nazi regime. Despite the loss of its founder, the Rosenthal company remained the premier supplier of high-quality porcelain tableware to the Third Reich. After the war, in 1950, Philip Rosenthal Jr. (1916-2001) joined his father's company as an advertising manager. By 1958, he had become its CEO, continuing his father’s vision to produce high-quality porcelain in line with progressive tastes. Through the rest of the 20th century, Rosenthal was the most commercially successful porcelain producer in Germany. In the postwar era, Rosenthal’s most famous tableware lines have included 2000 by Raymond Loewy and Richard Latham (1954), Magic Flute by Bjørn Wiinblad (1959), Suomi by Timo Sarpaneva (1976), and Moon by Jasper Morrison (1997). The company has enjoyed many popular and critically acclaimed collaborations with designers and brands, like Salvador Dalì, Tapio Wirkkala, Walter Gropius, Andy Warhol, Ron Arad, Enzo Mari, Konstantin Grcic, and Versace. Rosenthal's product lines have encompassed more than ceramics over the years. In 1972, the company began producing furniture, under the subsidiary Rosenthal Einrichtung, in Espelkamp, Germany. Standouts from this arm of Rosenthal include Gunter Ferdinand Ris and Herbert Selldorf’s futuristic Sunball Lounge Chair (1969), Verner Panton’s Relaxer Rocking Chair (1974), Burchard Vogtherr's Vario Pillo...

  • Mark King "Leopard" Expressionist Pencil Signed Limited Edition Serigraph Framed
    By Mark King 1
    Located in Dayton, OH
Leopard by Mark King. Expressionist serigraph on paper, signed lower right. Limited edition. Mark King, British (1931) Mark King was born in Bombay, India to British parents in 1931. King’s childhood was one of exotic experience and privileged education. After graduating from La Martiniére College in Calcutta, the sixteen-year-old King sailed to England to attend Bournemouth College of Art. There he studied painting, sculpture, architecture and theatre design. Subsequently, he spent seven years as the resident scenic designer at the Oxford Playhouse Theatre. In 1961, he decided to concentrate on painting, and he moved to Paris, where he studied at the École des Beaux-Arts and the Louvre. It was there that he developed his impressionistic style, influenced by the wealth of examples of European masters. Mark King describes his approach to painting as ninety percent preparation. “It takes a great deal of time for me but once I begin, I work with great impetus, with immense bursts of energy. It is not until the last ten or fifteen minutes before completion that I am able to see where the painting is going and to catch the mood of the moment.” Change has played an important role in both King’s art and life. “I have a need, artistically, for exposure to new ideas and images,” he says, and it was this need that brought him to America in 1968, a move that prompted a shift in his working methods. A landscape painter in France, King began to expand his subject matter to include sports. With his work as a sports artist King found the camera an indispensable tool, and began to work from photographs. Since coming to America...
