Cockfighting has been practised for thousands of years.
The origins of cockfighting can be traced back to the domestication of the wild cock (Gallus Gallus), which began when the first farmers settled in Asia and organised the first chicken farms.
Fighting was then imported from Asia to Europe by the Greeks and then the Romans.
In France and the overseas departments and regions, cockfighting is thought to have been introduced by the Spanish in the late 15th century in the West Indies and imported from England in the 18th century to the Hauts-de-France region.
There are just over 500 cockfighting breeders left in Hauts-de-France, compared with 15,000 in the 1920s.
The business is in full decline, and many countries have long since banned this cruel practice, including Belgium in 1929, and more recently all 50 US states in 2007 and all 5 US territories since the end of 2019 with the enactment of the Farm Bill by Donald Trump.
