About the Item

Coryndon's work is characterized by exceptional craftsmanship, innovation and beauty. The processes involved are complicated but the delicately laboured final surface reveals a unique depth with every single area of the piece worked over in meticulous detail. Waiting for Godot is made up of two panels of oil glazed poplar ply with gilded raised detail. The bas relief is built up in traditional gesso and overlaid with thin sheets of white gold. The surface detail is engraved with needles which is followed by layers of tinted glaze and a unique technique developed in the studio. This involves hand cut overlays of very Fine Japanese paper to create subtle textures of bark or skin that feel like vellum to the touch. The delicately laboured surface involves many fine layers of precise application; each piece taking many man hours to create. Waiting for Godot depicts a twisted, silvered tree. The work was inspired by Japanese lacquer work and the strong, sculptural, wind-formed structure of the trees that surround the studio where the piece was made. Each year in October the trees are pruned to the same height producing an elaborate knuckle of built up bark from which thin, silvery branches appear in Spring and reach towards the sky. The panels are split at just the height that the tree will once again be pollarded as the cycle of growth and dormancy continues. The title refers to the Samuel Beckett play in which the initial stage directions describe the simple stage setting as a country road, a tree, night. It is a location not to be particularised. The play is divided into two acts; in the first act the tree is bare and in the second a few leaves have appeared despite the script indicating it is only the next day. Of the two main characters, one is 'reaching' towards the spiritual (the upper panel) and the other more, 'rooted' in the physical (the lower panel). The symbolism of the play is held in the solitary tree as the cross or tree of life.
