Pair of Swedish 19th Century Watercolors in Pompeian style.

About the Item

A pair of Swedish watercolors from the late gustavian or early empire period painted in neoclassical or pompeian style. Period and probably original frames. The watercolors have been discolored by the sun and time and have a brownish color to the paper. Still very decorative with the patina. The frames have a nice somewhat worn gilding with patina. The water colors are now mounted acid free. Neoclassicism was a Western cultural movement in the decorative and visual arts, literature, theatre, music, and architecture that drew inspiration from the art and culture of classical antiquity. Neoclassicism was born in Rome at the time of the rediscovery of Pompeii and Herculaneum, but its popularity spread across Europe as a generation of European art students finished their Grand Tour and returned from Italy to their home countries with newly rediscovered Greco-Roman ideals. The main Neoclassical movement coincided with the 18th-century Age of Enlightenment, and continued into the early 19th century. In architecture, the style continued throughout the 19th, 20th and up to the 21st century. Gustav III's Pavilion is a royal pavilion at the Haga Park, just outside Stockholm. As a highlight in Swedish art history, the Pavilion is a fine example of the European neoclassicism of the late 18th century in Northern Europe. The designer Louis Masreliez, (1748-1810) who became a trendsetter in the interior design of the period, was commissioned for the interiors which were done in the pompeian or neoclassical style. Condition:
Wear consistent with age and use. Minor fading. The paper discolored but otherwise in good condition and they still have a nice character a patina. Frames period and probably original with the gilding slightly worn and with patina. Now with acid free mounting.
