1970s Jay Maisel Beach Scene Color Photograph Signed Numbered and Framed

About the Item

A vintage circa 1970s beach scene photograph by New York City photographer Jay Maisel (Born 1931). This photograph has a period frame dating to the 1970s and retains the original information verso. This work is signed in the lower right corner of the mat and the edition number of 284 / 750 is hand written in the lower left corner of the mat. The photograph itself measures approximately 19.5” wide by 15.5” high. This photograph by "Jay Maisel, produced and copyrighted by Berkey K & L Studios in a limited edition of 750. Each print has been individually signed and numbered by the artist. The negatives will never be used again." From the Jay Maisel website, “After studying painting and graphic design at Cooper Union and Yale, Jay Maisel began his career in photography in 1954. While his portfolio includes the likes of Marilyn Monroe and Miles Davis, he is perhaps best known for capturing the light, color, and gesture found in everyday life. Some of his commercial accomplishments include five Sports Illustrated swimsuit covers, the first two covers of New York Magazine, the cover of Miles Davis’ Kind of Blue (the best-selling jazz album of all time), twelve years of advertising with United Technologies, and awards from such organizations as International Center for Photography, American Society of Media Photographers, Art Directors Club, Professional Photographers of America, and The Cooper Union. Since he stopped taking on commercial work in the late ’90s, Jay has continued to focus on his personal work. He has developed a reputation as a giving and inspiring teacher as a result of extensive lecturing and photography workshops throughout the country. He also continues to sell prints, which can be found in private, corporate, and museum collections.” You may have heard of Sammy Davis, Jr. and Marilyn Monroe. Jay Maisel had too. And he was sent to cover an after party event where both of these iconic superstars were in attendance. And he was the only photographer present. You may be wondering about the photos he took. I'll let Mr. Maisel explain, "My assignment was a simple one: go to an after-party. The event was the premiere of East of Eden with James Dean. Cover the party; come back with pictures of people at the festivities. Make ’em look good, and kid…don’t f*¢% up. When I got there, the first thing I was aware of was I was the only photographer there! The second thing was Sammy Davis Jr. playing the piano with Marilyn Monroe sitting next to him. They were delighted with each other. He was trying to get her to sing with him, she was all little girlish in her refusal, both flirting obviously and happily with each other. And me? I was so excited, I was amazed I didn’t wet my pants. There were no motors back then so it was shoot, wind, shoot, wind, and all the time I’m thinking, “Oh my God, this is the best.” I shot over 100 frames and the small, still voice (that overrides your lack of intelligence) said to me, “There aren’t 100 frames on that roll of film.” Oh s#[†! I knew what that meant. I checked the take-up spool (for those of you under 40, that was the gizmo that took up the slack when you wound the film— you do remember film , don’t you?) and it wound freely. Of course that meant I was shooting with no film going through the camera. I was suicidal. I reloaded the camera, but by then Marilyn and Sammy were gone." So what am I getting to? Well, I think you should definitely get this photo by Mr. Maisel. The photo may have some fading to the colors - I'm not sure. But I have to admit that I find the palette quite dreamy.

  • Vintage Pair 1992 Signed Gregg Robinson Post Modern Geometric Abstract Paintings
    Located in Atlanta, GA
A pair of large, vintage, circa 1992, signed and titled post modern style geometric abstract paintings by contemporary American artist Gregg Robinson (born 1948). In the artist's own words regarding his work, "The media before you is the result of many years of experimentation that came to its current form in early 1992. I work with dry pigment over a plaster surface. My tools are broad knives, sponges, rags and masking. The finish is a high gloss alkyd resin." Each painting is on canvas attached to a wood support and stretcher. They are currently wired to hand vertically, but could also be hung horizontally. From the Gunnar Nordstrom Gallery website, "Born in Seattle, Washington in 1948, Gregg Robinson attended Simon Fraser University and the University of Washington before studying at the Brooks Art Institute in California. Robinson’s precise, geometric style is most reminiscent of the classic modernism noted in the Bauhaus of the 1920’s. Robinson’s intent is to create strong, high contrast images dominated by black-on-light pattern and saturated primary colour. Robinson successfully blends the classic hard-edged abstraction of Mondrian with a romantic soft...
