19th Century Italian Grand Tour Photograph of the Roman Forum

About the Item

A large-scale photogravure of The Forum in Rome, in original faux grain painted frame. Showing the impressive ruins of the Temple of Saturn in center and the remains of the Temple of Vespasian to the left. Great scale at almost 4 feet wide. Measures: 45.5 inches wide 23.5 high For centuries the Forum was the center of day-to-day life in Rome: the site of triumphal processions and elections; the venue for public speeches, criminal trials, and gladiatorial matches; and the nucleus of commercial affairs. Here statues and monuments commemorated the city's great men. The teeming heart of ancient Rome, it has been called the most celebrated meeting place in the world. Located in the small valley between the Palatine and Capitoline Hills, the Forum today is a sprawling ruin of architectural fragments and intermittent archaeological excavations.

It has been drilled to be wired, not the first time I have owned one of these that had been mounted as a lamp. The Temple of Vespasian and Titus is located in Rome at the western end of the Roman Forum between the Temple of Concordia and the Temple of Saturn...
