About

As LIFE magazine's star fashion photographer Mark Shaw shot incredible moments inside the legendary house of Dior throughout the 1950s and '60s. Captured in the Grand Salon of his Paris Flagship is Monsieur Dior adjusting jewels on the model Victoire's neck in preparation for a couture show in 1954. She wear's Zaire dress from A/W Haute Couture Collection. When Christian Dior hired Victoire, he interjected a youthful zest to his choice of models. Armed with a sensual and sassy attitude, the 19-year-old Parisian was short and curvy, and within two seasons became Monsieur Dior’s new star. Sally Kirkland, LIFE magazine’s fashion director understood Victoire’s appeal immediately.“You’re great!” she exclaimed, and was the first to do a huge story on Dior’s new darling. Standing on a ladder, Mark Shaw took this picture and tried to encourage the designer to place his hand on Victoire’s famous bosom. “Being chaste, Monsieur Dior chose to touch my necklace instead,” she recalls. These limited editioned works come directly from the Mark Shaw Photographic Archives and are sold exclusively through the Andrew Wilder Gallery. There are also two smaller and one larger format editions available. Call us in Los Angeles for details. This image appears full page in the book, "Dior Glamour Mark Shaw" published by Rizzoli.
