About the Item
ORIGINAL FRAMED PHOTOGRAPH
By the celebrated British photojournalist and filmmaker John Bulmer (b.1938). He was a pioneer of colour photography and the use of 35mm film and worked for the Sunday Times magazine during the 1960s and 1970s period.
Depicting a snapshot in time, a woman looks into the lens with a spaniel on her lap, she is sitting in a blue mini parked outside of the village butcher’s shop ‘D.S. Evans & Son, Family Butchers’.
Originally formed part of the 1966 Sunday Times Colour Supplement ‘Portrait of a Village’ in which Bulmer was “asked to do a picture story on the quintessential English Village. The writer was an old friend of mine from Cambridge, Martin Page, and the Sunday Times put a researcher on to the job of finding the right typical English Village. It had to have all the things that a village should; a butcher, baker an undertaker etc. and not be full of retired people. They searched throughout Britain, and the village they came up with was Pembridge in Herefordshire”.
The collection was later turned into a book ‘Portrait of an English Village’.
The colour print is signed verso ‘John Bulmer’ and framed in a simple white frame. The frame is currently glazed with plexiglass.
It is in excellent vintage condition with no issues to name. The frame has some slight wear to it.
Overall measurements 73cm x 53cm x 4cm. The image size is 50cm x 35cm.
