Stunning Modernist, Photograph NYC Artist Tracy Marciano

About the Item

Tracy A. Marciano, bio An introduction to 35mm film photography in the late 1990s launched an eternal interest in photography. A new camera, no idea how to use it, and a trip to Morocco in 1998 developed into creative ethos with an alliance of photographers working in an array of techniques and alternative processes. Mentorships with photographers such as Scott Thode, Jill Enfield and Joyce Tennyson were fundamental in understanding the medium and finding my voice as an artist. Scott Thode was exploring the AIDS epidemic on the streets of New York City at the time. His black and white images presented viewers with a compelling visual survey of the public health crisis unfolding while also revealing his compassion for marginalized populations. Jill Enfield was working with infrared film at the time and exploring how space and time were manipulated when visual expectations were challenged by shifting the paradigm of natural lighting and hand coloring the final print. As digital photography began to move to the forefront Jill started working with the wet collodion process. Joyce Tennyson brought an ethereal aspect to photography with her use of light combined with triple exposures. The most profound and comprehensive learning about photography developed during this experience. Joyce is an extraordinary person with the ability to identify and visualize delicate nuances of a moment. Living in New York City during this time, my photography became a study in public spaces without people. It is the rare occasion that the human form will appear unless it is an abstraction or a metaphor for life around me. NYC offered a sense of comfortable isolation. Capturing the sense of stasis and motion at the same time continues to motivate me. I prefer to use AGFA SCALA film, a black and white transparency film developed as a positive, although it’s becoming harder to find. I have a BA in art history and cultural anthology from New York University, a Master of Science from Pratt Institute School of Architecture and attended Columbia University for graduate studies in landscape design focused on the therapeutic quality of horticulture as it relates to mental illness. I’m not done learning yet.
