"1775- 167th Anniversary - 1942. Always Advance with the U.S. Marines" Poster

About the Item

Presented is a vintage 1942 United States Marine Corps poster, celebrating the organization's 167th Anniversary. The poster features a dynamic illustration of an American marine wearing a green helmet with the Marines iconic eagle, globe, and anchor emblem on it. He brandishes a bayonet rifle gun. Below him is the text "Always Advance with the U.S. Marines Land, Sea, Air" in patriotic red and blue text. In the background are illustrations of men battling with swords and a larger Marines emblem in red. Text runs diagonally on each side, naming various iconic USMC operations and battles from the organization's past and present, including the Bon Homme Richard, Bladensburg, Fort Fisher, Santiago, Belleau Wood, Midway, Bataan, and Soloman Islands. The years "1775" and "1942" are printed in red at top, one in each corner. The celebratory text "167th Anniversary" is printed at top center, in blue script. The Marine Corps was founded on November 10, 1775, when the Continental Congress passed a resolution that "two battalions of Marines be raised" for service as landing forces with the Naval fleet. Serving on land and at sea, these first Marines distinguished themselves in a number of important operations. Marines have participated in all wars of the United States. This poster was printed in Philadelphia by the McCandlish Litho Corporation. It was issued in September of 1942, as part of the recruiting effort of WWII.
