1940's Santa Fe Railway Travel Posters, Set of Four

About the Item

Strong graphics and the subtle yet striking use of color capture iconic romance of South West travel destinations in these striking original vintage posters. Created in the 1940s and early 1950s as railway promotional items by the Santa Fe Railway Company, a division of the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway (ATSF), the posters offer images that encourage the imagination to roam. The vibrant color and condition contributes their impact making the set of four posters real eye-catchers and significant items for display. This set consists of: 1. The Chief Way (1951) 2. Hopiland "Buffalo Dancer" (1949) 3. Land of Pueblos News Mexico (1949) 4. Red Cliffs "Continental Divide, New Mexico" (1950's) Two of these posters, Land of the Pueblos and Hopi Land, are attributed to Don Louis Perceval. Born in England in 1908 and raised in Los Angeles, Perceval attended Chouinard Art Institute and the Royal Academy in London. Perceval's career was shaped by the sketching trips he took from Los Angeles to the desert. Reaching Arizona in 1927 he became enamored by the Land and the people, most notably the Hopi and Navajo Tribes. Santa Fe was an abbreviation for the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway (ATSF), one of the larger railroads in the United States. Chartered in February 1859, the railroad reached the Kansas-Colorado border in 1873 and Pueblo, Colorado, in 1876. To create a demand for its services, the railroad set up real estate offices and sold farm land along the line from the land grants that it was awarded by Congress. Despite the name, the Santa Fe line never served Santa Fe, New Mexico, as the terrain was too difficult, the town of Santa Fe ultimately was reached by a branch line originating in Lamy, New Mexico.
