1972 Olympic Poster by Oskar Kokoschka
About the Item
This original vintage poster by Oskar Kokoschka is from the 1972 Olympic Games held in Munich, Germany. Posters were important for the marketing of this event, the XX Olympiad, which took place between 26 August and 10 September. With 195 sporting events and over 7000 athletes from 121 nations, this was the largest games yet.
Planning was underway from the late 1960's to produce a series of art posters using some of the most famous and emerging artists of the day. In 1968 a partnership was formed with the printing house F. Bruckmann KG, Munich, setting up a company called Edition Olympia 1972 GmbH.
Otl Aicher was appointed head of the organising committee's visual design group. The art series was produced in five sets, each made up of seven posters. This poster is from the first set issued in 1969-70, which also included work by Hans Hartung, Charles Lapicque, Jan Lenica, Marino Marini, Serge Poliakoff and Fritz Winter. Oskar Kokoschka (1886-1980) was an Austrian artist and educator. His work is held in important collections throughout the world.
Some posters were printed on higher quality paper and signed by the artist - this is from the unlimited edition and signed in the plate. It is linen backed and is in good condition. It will be sent rolled in a strong tube.
