"Colorado" Vintage United Airlines Travel Poster, circa 1970s

About the Item

Offered is a vintage travel poster for United Airlines from the 1970s. This advertisement poster shows Colorado as one of United Airlines' alluring travel destinations. The design features two men fishing along a rushing river, surrounded by picturesque trees and mountains. The work was designed by artist Thomas Hoyne, with his signature in the plate visible along the rocks on the right side. Founded in the 1920s, United Airlines has grown to be one of the world's largest airlines. The company got their start delivering mail, as most airlines did at the time, and later shifted to passenger travel. Posters such as this one were used to advertise the destinations customers could travel to with United. By highlighting scenic landscape depictions and attractive monuments, these posters encouraged flight ticket sales and global tourism. Thomas Hoyne was a well known artist, best recognized as a painter of maritime art. A former Navy officer, Hoyne began his career as a commercial artist, drawing advertisements for companies such as Green Giant and Charmin. He also designed multiple other posters for United Airlines aside from this one, where the destination was highlighted with depictions of famous city monuments or outdoor scenes. The poster features a scenic view of fishermen along a river nestled in the Colorado mountains. The image is painterly in its style, with visible paint strokes emulated from the original design in the lithograph. The work includes "United Airlines" printed boldly at the bottom in black lettering. CONDITION: Overall very good condition. Original offset print. • "Fort Worth" Vintage Delta Airlines Travel Poster by John Hardy, circa 1950s
    By John Hardy (Artist)
    Located in Colorado Springs, CO
This is a vintage Fort Worth travel poster for Delta Airlines, issued in the 1950s. A very collectible poster, the composition shows a man in a cowboy hat, set against a bright yellow background. The poster was designed by John Hardy. Delta Air Lines was founded in 1925 as a fleet of crop-dusting planes in the Mississippi River Delta, which is how it earned its name. Passenger flights began in 1929 across the Louisiana, Mississippi, and Texas area and grew over time, with offered flights across the country and eventually to international destinations. In 1959, Delta was the first airline to fly the Douglas DC-8 and it was also the first to fly the Convair 880 jet in 1960; two large moments in aviation history. A major airline in the United States, Delta has always invested in promotional print advertising, hiring numerous artists for magazines and poster work. In the 1950s and 60s, Delta hired artist John Hardy to create a series of hand-pulled silkscreen posters, highlighting some of their top destinations. These portrait-oriented posters...
