About the Item

Presented is a vintage WWII U.S. Army poster of a B-17 Flying Fortress bomber plane. The poster was illustrated by Earle B. Winslow in 1942 and published by the Recruiting Publicity Bureau in 1943. The poster depicts a B-17 mid-battle as it drops two bombs. The B-17 is set against a dark umber sky. The poster text reads, “Flying Fortress” at center in orange and “Deadly Queen of the Skies_ pride of the Army Air Forces” at bottom in black block letters. The Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress was a four-engine heavy bomber produced in the 1930's for the United States Army Air Corps. In its first tests, the Boeing B-17 outperformed competitors and exceeded the performance specifications set by USAAC. The B-17 earned a reputation as a fast, high-flying, long-range bomber with heavy defensive armament. It became known for its toughness based upon photos of damaged B-17s that safely returned to base. In addition to its role as a bomber, the B-17 was also employed as a transport, anti-submarine aircraft, drone controller, and search-and-rescue aircraft. The B-17 was also deployed in the Pacific, where it conducted raids against Japanese shipping and airfields. Artist Earle Winslow (1884–1969) studied at the Art Institute of Chicago, the Detroit School of Fine Arts, at the Art Students League and Woodstock, NY under artist George Bellows. By 1929 Winslow had his own studio in New York City. He illustrated for The Saturday Evening Post, Cosmopolitan, Women's Home Companion, Liberty, and Outdoor Life. During World War II, the US Marines, US Army, and the Forestry Service commissioned him for posters and instructional manuals. Beginning in 1948 he was an instructor at Pratt Institute and at other visual arts and cartoon schools before moving permanently to Woodstock. Condition: Color lithograph. Color still very vibrant. Crease at centerfold and small creases throughout in the outer margins. Signed by the artist in the lithographic stone “Earle B Winslow 42.” The U.S. Army logo is printed in white at top left. "P-X-1-RPB-10-11-43-7500" and the United States Army Recruiting Publicity Bureau logo at bottom right. Poster has been archivally framed in a custom-built black wooden frame, UV Plexiglas, and acid-free backing and mat. Framed Dimensions: 47” H x 35 1/2” W x 1 1/4” D.
