Lithograph "Venice" Artist Giuseppe Riccardo Lanza

About the Item

Lithograph with manual intervention "Venice" by Giuseppe Riccardo Lanza Lithograph mounted on wood panel Giuseppe Riccardo Lanza was born on December 23, 1933, in Turin, Italy. Multifaceted artist, active from the 1950s until 1986, the year of his tragic death. A painter, sculptor, photographer and graphic designer, the creator of a stage-sculpture in the San Valeriano Quarry near Piossasco, as well as a 12-meter-high sculpture on the hill of the same town, Lanza holds a prominent place in the national and international artistic culture of those years. In 1972 he received the "Miró Prize" from Barcelona. An early purely pictorial phase saw him already interested in the concept of the city. His are imagined and imaginary cities, strongholds by the sea, ambiguous lines separating sky from sea, land from sea and sky. At the turn of the 1950s and 1960s, the canvases became two-dimensional boxes seeking a synthesis on the city's habitat, with a strong backdrop component. He began researching materials: from wood sculptures he moved on to plexiglass, mirror plates that duplicate and deform. His artistic interest shifts to man. Its place in the city, the space it occupies, the geometries it creates. The body as an artistic laboratory, the hands concrete and indispensable, the mouth cruel and an instrument of torture. "Joseph Richard Lanza is a dreamer, but not of romantic extraction, but technological (...) Lanza is a dangerous man." (The Resto del Carlino, Oct. 11, 1972)
