About the Item

Original vintage Asia travel poster for Benares The Holy City issued by the East Indian Railway (1845-1952) featuring artwork titled The Bathing Ghats by the British artist Dorothy Newsome (1900-1980) showing people, some families and children socialising and washing on the ghats, the steps leading down to the Ganges River in India, with ancient temples in the background on a blue border, the title text above and below with the East Indian Railway company heritage crest and stamp. Also known as Varanasi or Kashi, the spiritual city of Benares is located in Uttar Pradesh north India on the sacred Hindu River Ganges / Ganga. Printed by Norbury, Natzio and Co Ltd, Manchester and London. Good condition, folds, staining, creasing, small paper loss on bottom left corner, ink stamp with writing in bottom right corner, backed on linen.
