Antique Print of the Battle of Romans near the River Sicoris or Segre in France

About the Item

Antique battle map of the Segre river. With detailed legend explaining the various elements of the print. This print most likely originates from an edition of 'The Commentaries of Caesar, Translated into English. To Which is Prefixed a Discourse Concerning The Roman Art of War' by William Duncan. The Segre (Spanish and Catalan: Segre, French: Sègre) is a tributary of the Ebro. The Segre was known in ancient times to the Greeks and Romans as the Sicoris. The river rises on the Pic del Segre in the French Pyrenees. This mountain is located in the comarca Alta Cerdanya in the old Spanish province of Roussillon, in the current French department of Pyrénées-Orientales. From the Pic del Segre, the river runs west through the Cerdanya region. At Puigcerdà, the Segre enters Spain and at La Seu d'Urgell, the Valira from Andorra joins the Segre. From here, the river continues south-west through Catalonia. There is a dam near Oliana: the Oliana reservoir (Spanish: embalse de Oliana). At Camarasa, the Noguera Pallaresa flows into the Segre. Then the river flows through Balaguer and at Vilanova de la Barca the Noguera Ribagorçana flows into the Segre. The river continues south-west through Lerida and about 25 km further the Cinca flows into the Segre; With a length of 170 km, it is the longest tributary of the Segre. Finally, at Mequinenza, the Segre flows into the Ebro. Artists and Engravers: Engravings by T. Baptist and D. Stoopendaal. Condition: Very good, general age-related toning. By Heywood Hardy
    Located in Colorado Springs, CO
Presented is an 1894 signed first edition goupil-gravure print by Heywood Hardy (1842-1933). The engraving was printed in Paris and published by Boussod Valadon & Co. Publishers, the successors to Goupil & Co. Designed as a companion to After the Drive, Hardy’s On the Moors (Dogging) depicts three hunters and their two dogs hunting ducks. The youngest of the three men is shooting his gun as the dogs excitedly wait to chase after the bird. This print is one of only 75 artist’s proofs and has been signed by the artist in pencil at the lower left corner of the print’s margin. Hunting has a long history in England and is considered a very traditional activity even today. One of the most popular forms of hunting is called “wildfowling” and targets wild geese and ducks. Often conducted on coastal marshes, wildfowling is typically a solitary or small group sport unlike the grand group fox and pheasant hunts...
