Antique Print of Turkish Horse by Eerelman, 1898

About the Item

Antique print titled 'Het Turksche Paard'. Rare antique print of a Turkish / Arabian horse. This print was part of the Dutch edition of "Paardenrassen Kunstalbum", a portfolio with 41 lithographed plates based on paintings by Eerelman, which depict different breeds of draft horses. Original (Dutch) text pages included. Artists and Engravers: Made by an anonymous engraver after 'Otto Eerelman'. Otto Eerelman (1839–1926) was a Dutch painter, best known for his depictions of dogs and horses. Born in Groningen, the Netherlands, Eerelman was also recognized as a court painter and created several portraits of Queen Wilhelmina as both a princess and a monarch. At the end of the 19th c. he worked in the Hague and his fame grew, giving him large commissions including the Dutch Royal Family. His portret of the 8 year old later Queen Wilhelmina on her pony 'Baby' is well known.Throughout his career, he demonstrated a keen ability to capture the essence of his subjects, particularly the nobility and character of animals, which earned him significant acclaim during his lifetime. His work reflects a range of interests and subjects beyond animals, including genre scenes and historical paintings. Eerelman's legacy is preserved in his detailed and lifelike portrayals, providing a window into the cultural and artistic sensibilities of his era. More about the technique used by Eerelman: Chromolithography, which emerged in the 19th century, is a method for making multi-color prints. This process involves using a lithographic stone or plate for each color. The artist or craftsman would draw the image with a grease-based crayon or ink onto a lithographic stone or a zinc or aluminum plate. Each stone or plate is then used to print a different color in the image. In the case of Otto Eerelman, who was known for his paintings and prints of animals, horses in particular, he would have begun with a key image, which contained the main lines of the design. He would then use separate stones for each additional color, carefully registering each stone so that the colors would align perfectly to create the final image. The process could involve a dozen or more separate stones to achieve the rich and detailed images for which chromolithographs are known. Eerelman would have paid particular attention to the mixing of colors, the sequence of printing, and the pressure applied during the process to achieve the desired effect. The final product, as seen in the detailed representation of the horse in your uploaded image, would showcase a rich layering of colors with a depth that aimed to replicate the quality and coloration of a painting.
