About the Item
Antique print titled 't Dorp Jorwerd'. View of the village of Jorwerd, Friesland, the Netherlands. This print originates from 'Vaderlandsche gezichten of afbeeldingen, behoorende tot den Tegenwoordigen staat der Vereenigde Nederlanden, in den jaare 1786 (tot 1792) naar 't leven getekend door J. Bulthuis (later: J. Gardiner Visscher naar J.B.) en in 't koper gedruckt door K.F. Bendorp.', published in Amsterdam by H. Gartman (1786-1792).
Artists and Engravers: Carel Frederik Bendorp (Sas van Gent, 1736 - Dordrecht, 1814) was a Dutch engraver, draftsman and painter of mostly city and town views. He was a student of Hendrik Kobell, Dirk Langendijk and Wouter Uiterlimmige. Jan Bulthuis (Groningen, 1750 - Amsterdam, 1801) was a Dutch artist, painter and draughtsman. His painting skills were trained under Jurriaen Andriessen, while his drawing was developed under Johannes Wieringa. While he initially painted landscapes for wall decorations, he later dedicated himself to drawing town and city views. He worked in Groningen until 1780, when he moved to Amsterdam. In 1785 he enrolled in the Stadstekenacademie (City Art Academy) and won a gold medal. His bvest known work is for "Tegenwoordigen Staat der Vereenigde Nederlanden". He also prepared a series of drawings for "Beschrijving van de Zaanlandsche Dorpen".

A View at Anamooka This engraving after a drawing comes from the official account of Cook's third voyage, 'A voyage to the Pacific Ocean'. Captain James Cook (1728-1779) made three separate voyages to the Pacific (with the ships Endeavour, Resolution, Adventure, and Discovery) and did more than any other voyager to explore the Pacific and Southern Ocean. Cook not only encountered Pacific cultures for the first time, but also assembled the first large-scale collections of Pacific objects to be brought back to Europe. He was killed in Hawaii in 1779. Cook was in Nomuka (Annamooka), Tonga or Friendly Isles from May 1-14, 1777. "On May 2 1777 the expedition reached Nomuka and anchored in the harbour on the north side of the island, which Cook had already used in June 1774. Both ships were in want of refreshments. The engraving was printed in Paris and published by Boussod Valadon & Co. Publishers, the successors to Goupil & Co. Designed as a companion to After the Drive, Hardy’s On the Moors (Dogging) depicts three hunters and their two dogs hunting ducks. The youngest of the three men is shooting his gun as the dogs excitedly wait to chase after the bird.
