Antique Satirical Print of Napoleon Fleeing from the Battlefield '1815'

About the Item

Antique print titled 'Buonaparte au Mont St. Jean, fait usage de son talisment ordinaire'. Rare satirical print of Napoleon fleeing from the battlefield. He is similarly dressed except that he wears a cuirass, the back and front joined by straps, and his empty scabbard hangs at his side. He looks over his shoulder at his little son (right) who runs after him, holding up a toy windmill on a stick. Napoleon's sabre and star of the Legion of Honour lie on the ground (right). The child, styled in France during the Hundred Days Prince Imperial, wears long trousers and a sash, with a white frill at the neck and short sleeves. He says: "Papa Lache, lache les courois de ta cuirasse et jette la a terre tu courrera plus fort." Napoleon says: "L'aimable Enfant il ce [sic] sert des mêmes mots dont je caresse mes Officiers et mes Généreaux." In the background a platoon of French infantry fires steadily at British cavalry who advance from the right; their officer, pointing to Napoleon, says: "le Lache! il nous abbandonne [sic]." Published 1815.

  • Antique Satirical Print of the Duchess of St Albans by Heath '1829'
    Located in Langweer, NL
Antique print titled 'Run Neighbours Run - St Al_ns is Quadrilling It'. In this print, the Duchess of St Albans dances a quadrille (a dance performed by four couples) with an unidentified naval officer, whose dancing steps resemble those of the hornpipe, a dance popular among sailors. The other three couples of the quadrille stand around them, looking on. All of the figures are fashionably dressed, with the Duchess' clothing being particularly extravagant. Harriot Mellon, Duchess of St Albans, was a former actress who married the elderly banker Thomas Coutts in 1815. After Coutts' death, she remarried to the Duke of St Albans in 1827, causing a scandal due to his being 23 years younger than she. Mellon, the richest woman in Britain after her husband's death, was a philathropist and patron of the arts, but was a controversial figure in fashionable society due to her humble origins.
