About the Item

Woodcut Engraving of "The Love of all Beauteous Things", poem by Robert S Bridges (1844-1930, British poet and poet laureate 1913-1930. by Henry Clarence Whaite (British 1895-1978) on thin wove paper, attached on the top edge to backing paper this copy is unsigned (we have also listed a signed copy of this one) measurements: of the wove sheet 8.75 x 6.5 inches Condition report: In fair condition for such fragile paper, crease to upper right corner, light foxing and discolouration around margin although printed image remains clear. This would frame very nicely. Super example of Whaite's work, and one of several we are currently working on from a small collection of his woodcuts. Henry Clarence Whaite (1895-1978) was a cousin to the first Henry Clarence Whaite (1828-1912), a most respected landscape painter and contemporary of Turner. The later Mr Whaite, whose work we are featuring, studied under Henry Tonks at the Slade School of Fine Art London, and exhibited at the New English Arts Club and the London Group. Whaite became a teacher of art, and also produced his own paintings and engravings. His woodcuttings are considered to be amongst his most accomplished work.

  • Antique 1755 Copperplate Engraving Westminster Bridge Lambeth Survey of London
    Located in Dayton, OH
Antique hand colored riverscape / landscape copperplate engraving based on a painting by Jacob Maurer and engraved by Paul Fourdrinier - A View of Westminster Bridge from Lambeth, published according to Act of Parliament 1754 for Stowe’s Survey of London. BIO: Paul Fourdrinier sometimes referred to as Peter or Pierre Fourdrinier, was an 18th Century engraver in England. Paul Fourdrinier, engraver and printseller, was born on 20 December 1698 in Groningen in the Netherlands, the son of Jacques Fourdrinier and his wife, Jeanne Theroude, Huguenot refugees from Dieppe, Normandy. He was a pupil of Bernard Picart at Amsterdam for six years, and came to England in 1720. He was employed in engraving portraits and book illustrations. He also engraved two works by Peter Monamy, marine paintings displayed in Vauxhall Gardens. The engravings were published in 1743, but may have been executed earlier. Starting in 1742 Fourdrinier produced a series of books consisting of numerous folding charts showing "The Succession of Colonels to all his Majesties Land Forces from their Rise to 1742", as well as many other details of British military and naval personnel. The 2004 edition of the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography makes it clear that in the 19th century edition of the Dictionary of National Biography this engraver's works and career were assigned to two individuals, Peter (or Pierre) and Paul Fourdrinier. Peter/Pierre is now seen to be a fictitious individual resulting from an accidental misnaming of Paul. Paul Fourdrinier is mentioned as the engraver of some of the works listed above, and he has been identified with the Paul Fourdrinier who was of the parish of St. Martin's-in-the-Fields, married to Susanna Grolleau, and who died in January or February 1758. The couple had at least five children, including a son Henry Fourdrinier, whose daughter, or granddaughter, Jemima Fourdrinier was the mother of Cardinal John Henry Newman...

  • 1864 Abraham Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation, Antique Engraving by W Roberts
    Located in Colorado Springs, CO
Presented is a Proclamation of Emancipation wood engraving by W. Roberts. The engraving was published in 1864, just one year after President Abraham Lincoln signed the original Proclamation. W. Roberts was the artist and engraver and Corydon Alexis Alvord was the printer. The engraving was published by R. A Dimmick, in New York, 1864. The text of the Proclamation is set in a variety of typefaces, which is encased in a pictorial border. The border is decorated with a portrait of Abraham Lincoln and seven other vignettes, including the horrors of slavery at left, the bombardment of Fort Sumter at bottom, and scenes from a prosperous and united nation at right. On September 22, 1862, five days after the Union victory at the Battle of Antietam, Lincoln issued a preliminary decree stating that, unless the rebellious states returned to the Union by January 1, freedom would be granted to slaves within those states. No Confederate states took the offer, and on January 1, 1863 Lincoln presented the Emancipation Proclamation...
