Pop Art Robert Indiana Yield Brother 1971 Screenprint Edition 230 Red Blue
By Robert Indiana
Located in EL Waalre, NL
Pop Art Robert Indiana Yield Brother 1971 Screenprint Edition 230 Red Blue “Yield Brother”, from the “Decade” suite. Screenprint on heavy wove-paper, 1971. An impactful work where Indiana made use of military signage, stenciled letters and a palette of strong colours creating tension between it’s call for peace and the visual language of military posters. Signed and dated and numbered (46/200) in pencil by the artist. The print also bears the artist’s copyright ink stamp. Part of an edition of 230 total: 30 artist’s proof and a regular edition of 200. The edition was printed by Domberger, Stuttgart (Germany) and published by Multiples Inc. New York City. Professionally framed in a brushed aluminium frame. Museum-glass was used to minimize reflection. Ready to hang. About the artist Robert Indiana (pseudonym of Robert Clark) ( New Castle, USA 1928 – Vinalhaven, USA 2018) was an American painter, sculptor and poet. He was a leading representative of pop art and created the internationally famous LOVE symbol in 1964. A self-described American painter of signs”, Robert Indiana’s works explore visual culture, national identity and personal history through symbols and colours inspired by signage and graphic design. Indiana had his first solo exhibition in 1962 at Eleanor Ward’s Stable Gallery, which at that time also represented Cy Twombly and Robert Rauschenberg. In 1962 he participated with the work The Black American Dream #2 in the exhibition New Realists, organized in the gallery of Sidney Janis. It was here that pop art first announced itself as a new movement in visual art. In the following years, Indiana would participate in all the important group exhibitions of this movement. Although the Pop Art movement made Indiana famous, he was never fully comfortable with the consumerist nature of Pop Art as his work often was very politically outspoken. In 1978 Robert Indiana left New York City for good, moving to the remote island of Vinalhaven in Maine, close to where his hero, the painter Marsden Hartley had lived. Since then he rarely gave interviews or engaged in the art world, yet he continued to align himself with political causes, designing the official poster for Barack Obama’s Presidential campaign in 2008. During his lifetime Indiana had countless exhibitions all over the world, and his work is included in the collections of numerous international museums: among others Metropolitan Museum New York, Museum of Modern Art New York, Tate Modern London, Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam and Hara Museum of Contemporary Art, Tokyo. Signed Signed and numbered (46/200) by the artist in pencil. Condition Overall good condition. Full margins. Slight undulation on right side of the print. Slight moisture damage in upper left margin. Edition Part of an edition of 230 total: 30 artist's proof and a regular edition of 200. The edition was printed by Domberger, Stuttgart (Germany) and published by Multiples Inc. New York City. "Intermission" Cocktail Party Lithograph signed by Dave Fox
Located in Pasadena, CA
This lithograph by Dave Fox from 1991 features the artist's signature, lithograph number (1/70), and title "Intermission". Dave Fox's intention in the artwork is evident. It employs a subtler form of satire. The composition depicts an ordinary society event, infused with a pervasive sense of tedium among its participants, where nothing extraordinary unfolds. In the backdrop, a bar and its bartender serve as the setting, while in the foreground, two women engage in conversation, accompanied by a man holding a glass. He appears either poised to interject by social conditioning or already teetering on the precipice of profound ennui, displaying visible disinterest in the superficiality of their dialogue. The artist's meticulous attention to detail is particularly evident in the precise rendering of clothing, but their true mastery lies in portraying the women's eyes and lips, establishing the prevailing mood of the composition: a boredom beyond reality. Adding to the artistic finesse, the lithograph employs a creative use of light, with a left window serving as the primary light source. This illumination skillfully highlights the three characters in the foreground, while the figures in the background subtly blend into a darker environment. The carefully chosen shades of soft pastel pink and gray lend an elegant touch to the ensemble, enhancing the overall impact of the artwork. The artwork sits in a simple black woodframe. Dave Fox was born in Vienna, Austria in 1920, where he lived until shortly after the annexation of Austria in late 1938. Dave escaped via the German-Belgium border, seeking refuge in Belgium. From there he came to the United States in December 1939 and settled in Los Angeles. Dave was inducted into and served with the U.S. Army in the Philippines and Japan. Returning to the US, Dave studied at some of the first art schools in Los Angeles. He studied with artists, such as Rico Lebrun, Frances de Erderly, and Emil Bistrim at the Bistrim School of Fine Art. At the Jepson Art Institute, Guy Maccoy, a noted pioneer in the art of serigraphy introduced Dave to printmaking. After completing his studies, Dave was employed by an electronics firm as an artist and graphic designer. Dave went on to earn his BFA, MA, and MFA in drawing and painting with a special emphasis in printmaking from California State University Fullerton. Dave’s work included printmaking, painting, drawing, ceramics, and computer graphics. Dave Fox was an observer of life and translated all that he saw, heard, or experienced into his artwork. Growing up in Austria, the countryside was his playground. From early on Dave belonged to hiking groups and honed his observation skills, which he transferred to his new life in Los Angeles. In Los Angeles, Dave found new playgrounds – the LA Farmers Market, Melrose Ave., and the streets of Los Angeles at a time of growth and change. It was through his association with Jewish Federation in Los Angeles that he met his wife, Senta. Shortly after their marriage, they moved to Orange County, where they raised their two children. Dave divided his artwork equally between landscapes and people. He perfected his skills at drawing the human form and giving it personality and life. Throughout his long career, he always returned to themes that reflected his Jewish upbringing. His sketchpad, always with him, became his vehicle for capturing the world he saw. His interest in Jewish subjects was reflected in the people walking on Melrose Avenue; in the people enjoying Farmer’s Market in LA; in the chestnut vendor and the fish seller; in the Shabbat series, and in the abstract series reflecting a return to Jerusalem. Finally, when Dave turned his attention to ceramics he created a series of Jewish ceremonial objects – seder plates, Kiddush cups, and Havdalah sets...

Josef Albers from White Embossings on Gray Series, Print VI
By Josef Albers
Located in Brooklyn, NY
“In order to use colour effectively it is necessary to recognise that colour deceives continually.” Josef Albers “We never really perceive what colour really is, as it physically is. This fact makes colour the most relative medium in art.” Josef Albers “The structures are irrational statements which illustrate the artist’s claim that the eye seeks, in endless exploration, to fathom and master the contradictions of reversed symmetry. One begins to study the structure at some point where isometric order is suggested. One finds evidence for the reading of the work, but when one tries to take in the whole structure as a unit, new evidence requires a drastic reorganization of the work’s implications. That which was above shifts to below, that which was negative becomes positive, that which was full becomes vacant, that which was in front has moved to the rear. Having found a balance, the eye’s testing finds the entire constellation shifting into its reverse.” Gerald Nordland, in his essay for the “White Embossings on Gray” catalogue For sale, one print from Albers’ late in life exploration of color and perception, the “White Embossings on Gray” Series. For this series, renowned California print...
