19th Century Display Cabinet With Gilt Bronze Mounts

About the Item

An interesting and unusual small wall-hanging display cabinet in the Louis XVI style, walnut veneer and with gilt bronze mounts. It is of high quality and probably made in Paris during the late 19th century or around 1900 as special commission to display an artifact. There is a small display shelf mounted inside on the velvet covered back of cabinet. Originally, the cabinet has possibly displayed a valuable or ancient knife of some kind or some other kind of object with length. The small shelf inside the cabinet can be removed and one could for example use the cabinet for hanging some small art pieces against the velvet wall or just standing off the bottom of the inside of the cabinet. There are three bronze mounts missing from the lower part of the cabinet. Those are where the darker areas are. It is possible to have the dark areas fixed so that the colors of the veneer corresponds in the same color shade over the entire surface. In my opinion, the three missing mounts are not needed for the look of the cabinet.

  • 19th Century French Gothic Sacrament Cabinet

19th Century French Gothic Sacrament cabinet was artfully sculpted from solid oak and fruitwood to create a remarkable religious artifact designed to be appreciated throughout the ages! The trapezoidal form of the casework is in keeping with the Gothic style, which historians concur originated in the Cathedral of St. Denis during the middle of the 12th century. Boldly molded crown follows the complex contours and overlooks the case below which features a single door flanked by cornerposts that feature pilasters facing front as well as the sides, with recessed arched panels topped with recessed circular frames above filled with carved rosettes highlighted in gold. The arched recesses facing the front are also filled with carved floral and wheat motifs also highlighted in gold, representing the Bread of Life. The door panel, however, steals the show, with a gloriously carved relief work depicting both wheat and fully laden grapevines adding the significance of the Blood of Christ...
