French Aubusson Carpet With Metallic Threads By Sallandrouze
About the Item
Western Central France
6’6” x 6’9” (1.98 x 2.05m)
Circa 1830s Louis Philippe period
Warp: wool, medium brown, 15 per inch
Pattern Weft: wool or gilt metal thread
This extremely finely woven and precisely executed wall or table tapestry
displays a
complex cartouche - lattice pattern.
The multi toned panels are centered by floriated quatrefoils or other
arabesque
medallions.
There is no unifying field color. The narrow border of partial guilloches
moves the eye
around the rug.
The metal thread has tarnished to a brown tone on the front from an
originally brighter
gold still visible on the verso.
It was produced by gilding very thin copper sheet, cutting it into thin strips
and winding
it around a silk core.
The precision of this process and its end result in this rug is mind- boggling.
The pattern is taken from contemporary velvet textiles with the repeat
enlarged to about
two feet by four feet.
The design is vaguely Islamic/Moorish in style, and hence a “Spanish”
character has
been assigned to this type of Aubusson.
The truly exemplary condition indicates a wall or table use, but since there
are no stains
or pressure marks from the latter use, we may assume that it was always
hung.
The slight color mellowing indicates a period of gentle exposure.
A few other pieces of this Fine weave, wide color scheme and complex
all-over design are
known, and most of them, as here, are relatively small.

- Antique French Aubusson TapestryLocated in New York, NYThe Aubusson tapestry manufacture of the 17th and 18th centuries managed to compete with the royal manufacture of Gobelins tapestry and the privileged position of Beauvais tapestry. Tapestry manufacture at Aubusson, in the upper valley of the Creuse in central France, may have developed from looms in isolated family workshops established by Flemings that are noted in documents from the 16th century. Typically, Aubusson tapestries depended on engravings as a design source or the full-scale cartoons from which the low-warp tapestry-weavers worked. As with Flemish and Parisian tapestries...Category

- Antique French Aubusson Rug, circa 1890, 8' x 9'Located in New York, NYAntique French Aubusson rug, circa 1890. Aubusson carpets are pile less and tapestry woven from that town to the southwest of Paris, by a group of independent weavers working under Royal or State protection. The designs are strictly classical, neoclassical or Victorian. They are virtually never “oriental”. The pattern wefts are wool with silk and/or metal thread for details in the more finely woven examples. Sizes tend toward the squarish and pieces 30’ by 30’ are not unknown. The 18th-19th century French clients included the nobility and haute bourgeoisie. Aubusson carpets were also exported to England and are often to be found in country houses. Light colors are the most popular and dark toned pieces are very rare. Besides traditional Louis furniture...Category
