About the Item

"Dalia James is a London based artist and designer. She graduated from Loughborough University with a degree in Woven Textiles (BA Hons). As a hand-weaver, the connection between her and the cloth she creates is essential. Dalia’s work focuses on colour and geometry and explores the relationship between the two. Her artistic philosophy has been shaped by the writing’s of William Morris and Josef Albers, and her work often references early 20th Century design and artistic movements. Dalia has been commissioned by The Ruskin Library & Museum, was one of TOAST’s New Makers for 2022, and collaborated with eyewear makers Cubitts, on there charity Lens Cloth Initiative in 2022. Based at Cockpit Studios in Bloomsbury, central London, Dalia is now passing on her skills through workshops. Intersection series On a trip to Florence to visit my sister who was living there at the time, and having never been before, she took me on a tour of the city and I was struck by the religious architecture, The cathedral, basilica and the churches in the city are all faced with beautiful polished marble organised in striking geometric grids in shades of green, white, pink and brown. I immediately knew that I wanted to use these buildings as a reference, the buildings were a perfect marriage of colour or geometry. The result being the Intersection series, the first pieces I created were large scale wall hangings, having decided to focus on weaving as an art form in itself at the beginning of 2020."
