18th Century Italian Neoclassical Gilt and Painted Decorative Wood Sword
Highly decorative and elegant period neoclassical Italian carved wood sword. This sword was made as part of an ornate paneling and has the classical elements of the Roman Empire that popularized neoclassical design at the beginning of the 18th century in Italy and quickly spreading thru out the western world. Neoclassicism was born in Rome in the mid-18th century, at the time of the rediscovery of Pompeii and Herculaneum. This Retaining the original paint and gilding, depicting Roman classical symbols such as the snake, bucrania and eagle. Bucrania draped or decorated with garlands of fruit or flowers was a Roman motif refering to the practice of garlanding sacrificial oxen from marble altars.
