Fireman's Life Saving Machine, 1907 USA

About the Item

Although it may resemble a trampoline, this is an extremely rare fire safety net designed to catch those leaping from burning buildings. The net was patented in 1887 by Thomas F. Browder who owned the patent until the early 1900s. Orders for the net came in from all over the US and even from across the globe as this was groundbreaking technology for the time. The United States government even ordered nets for all fire departments in Washington D.C. This is an incredibly early version which is over 100 years old. Thomas Browder sold his patent for the Fireman's Net in 1907 to the Corey-Patterson Company out of Greenfield, Ohio where it became known as The Browder Life Saving Machine and where this particular net was made. This net bears all of the markings on its rear side from the Corey-Patterson Company. The rear reads: Corey-Patterson MFG Co. Greenfield Ohio U.S.A. T.M. Reg. Pat. OF 1 LA FRANCE. The Fireman's Net was an important fire response tool for close to a century until it was phased out for new technology. The net was designed to fold for easy storage, and to easily snap open for quick deployment. Great aluminum machining and brown wool felt on handles which is a specification of the earlier models before rubber or leather was used instead. Heavy duty leather straps, coil springs and canvas make up the landing pad. Recently professionally cleaned and sanitized ready for use as a piece of striking wall art, sure to be a talking point of any room. Located at our LA Showroom.

  • Leather Fireman's Parade Belt
    Located in York County, PA
Leather fireman's parade belt with the word "LIBERTY in white on a red ground, Bloomsburg, Pennsylvania, circa 1900 This fireman's parade belt is of the type produced during the latter part of the 19th century, between roughly 1870 and 1900. Made of leather, the body of the belt is black. In the center is a recessed window, with a fancifully scalloped edge, behind which a red leather panel, upon which the word "Liberty" appears in raised, white letters. There is a white binding, it's edge trimmed with pinking shears to create a decorative border. The metal buckle fits into an opposing leather strap, small in scale and riveted beneath the outer one. The words that appear on fireman's parade belts were customized, sometimes displaying the title of the wearer (i.e., "chief" or "clerk"), sometimes the name of the city or town, and sometimes the name of the station, as-is the case in this instance. Attributed to Bloomsburg, Pennsylvania (Columbia County), I acquired it about 25 miles southwest, in adjacent Union County. Bloomsburg's first fire house, Friendship Fire Company, was established in 1868, shortly following the Civil War. Like most volunteer departments of that time, it was staffed by returning Union soldiers who volunteered, enjoying the comradery. Three more would follow, including Rescue Hose & Ladder (1870), Winona (1881), and Liberty Fire Company (1900). In the early 1990's the process was begun to modernize and consolidate all four stations into one. Liberty's fire house still stands on the 100 block of Leonard Street. Probably made in the year the Liberty Fire Company was established, for related parades and festivities, the great thing about this belt is the combination of the wonderful, early, painted surface and the terrific verbiage. While words such as "Clerk," "Bloomsburg," or "Rescue" would have limited appeal, the word "Liberty" opens the playing field to a nation-wide audience. Fire memorabilia...

  • 19th Century French Hand Carved Polychrome and Painted Life-Size Wall Crucifix
    Located in Dallas, TX
This important antique carved statue of Christ nailed on the cross was crafted in Lyon, France, circa 1850. Found in a private chapel in the Rhone Valley, the large antique cross features a detailed hand carved sculpture of Jesus nailed on a wooden cross with forged iron nails over his hands and feet. The painted sculpture is well-proportioned, and has realistic details throughout the body, face, and hair. The pediment has the Latin inscription INRI (in John 19:19), which in English translates to "Jesus the Nazarene, King of the Jews", and John 19:20 states that this was written in three languages, Hebrew, Latin, and Greek during the crucifixion of Jesus. The title "King of the Jews" is only used in the New Testament by gentiles, namely by the Magi, Pontius Pilate, and the Roman soldiers. In contrast, the Jewish leaders use the designation "King of Israel". Although the phrase "King of the Jews" is used in most English translations, it has also been translated "King of the Judeans". The life-size religious crucifix...
