Glen Michaels (1927-2020) Abstract Stone Mosaic Wall Sculpture Circa 1960's

About the Item

Monumental stone wall sculpture varying shades of white by Cranbrook artist Glen Michaels. Michaels was influenced by the landscape of the Pacific Northwest, His work usually featured jagged tiles that echoed these rock formations. We spoke with Glens daughter who told us "He used to joke that he had miles of tiles in the basement ( his studio) but it wasn’t much of an exaggeration! He would first create drawings of a work he had in mind then place a thick piece of plywood on sawhorses. To section off the work. He had a little kids chair that he’d sit on so he would have the proper perspective when gluing the tiles in place. If it was a very large work it would be done in pieces and he hired art students to clip tiles and help with sections of the work.". She also told us this piece was from the late 1960's to early 1970's. Michaels attended Yale School of Music to study piano, but did not finish his degree. He moved to New York City and worked for Harper's Magazine but later returned to Spokane where he attended Eastern Washington College of Education and received his B.A. in Art Education in 1957. After receiving his degree, he taught art at a local public school for two years. He moved to Michigan to pursue an M.F.A at the Cranbrook Academy of Art. He had a major in painting and a ceramics minor. working at Young People's Art Center (1958 - 1965). He taught at both Wayne State University (1966-1968) and the University of Windsor (1970 -1971). At the beginning of his career, his works were shown at the Bertha Schaefer Gallery in New York. . His work was praised in the New York Times by art critic John Canaday (January 7, 1962). Michaels appeared at the opening ceremony in 1968 of the Museum of Contemporary Crafts at the exhibition “Objects are…? The invitation required participants to bring an item - "larger or smaller than a bread box, everything from a paperclip to the barn door" - as an admission ticket. These objects became part of a collage of objects made on site by the artist "assembler master" Glen Michaels. Michaels was featured in the New York City Talk of the Town feature by George WS Trow . His work installations include Frank Lloyd Wright Smith House, Bricktown Station ( Detroit People Mover ) Bricktown Station, NASA Goddard Space Center , the IMF in Washington, and the Ford Motor Company 1964 New York World Exhibition exhibition (now installed at the Henry Ford Centennial Library ). Mr. Michaels was honored and exhibited at the Scarab Club in Detroit at his 90th birthday. Unsigned.
