Large Cast Bronze Plaque of a Roman Emperor
About the Item
A large finely cast bronze roundel depicting the Napoleon as a Roman emperor. In Neoclassical style, the bronze finish compliments the emperors defined features.
Dating to the early 19th century, this striking piece is of good scale and sophistication. The perfect plaque to be decoratively hung or mounted on a stand in a period property.
Napoleon
Napoleon was known to be obsessed with history and the world of Romans in particular.
He proclaimed himself as the Emperor of the French in 1804 during the Roman Empire. But in 1806 he, and the French, destroyed the Holy Roman Empire after it had survived for thousands of years.
In 1809, he proclaimed himself as Roman emperor when he annexed the Papal States. But this was more of a symbol as he did not rule over the city of Rome or surrounding territories.
