"Owed So Much", Rare Sculptural Plaque with Spitfire Airplane & Churchill Quote

About the Item

Rare and striking, this molded and patinated brass plaque -- which depicts a 1940s Spitfire in the midst of Art Deco clouds with the sun shining behind -- was made by the Walsall Lithographic Co to celebrate Britain's military power and determination to resist Nazi attacks. The text reads "Never Have So Many Owed So Much to So Few," one of Winston Churchill's most famous statements, referring of course to the pilots and soldiers who defending Great Britain at the lowest moments of World War II. This plaque is a fine example of a patented process developed by Walsall known as "Metcraft," where small, intricately-designed, embossed plaques were produced with heavy brass foil and finished with a lacquer resembling bronze.

  • "Algernon Sullivan Plaque, " Rare Bas Relief with Nude Figures by Jules Roine
    By Jules-Edouard Roiné 1
    Located in Philadelphia, PA
This rare and important relief sculpture honors Algernon Sydney Sullivan, one of the most admired and respected attorneys and civic leaders active in New York in the late 19th century. Born a Hoosier, he moved to New York by 1860, and though an ardent abolitionist, felt honor-bound to step forward to defend the sailors of the Confederate ship Savannah, captured by the Union early in the Civil War. He served in the public sector for a decade and fought the Tweed gang. Later, Sullivan created two of the more important and influential law firms in New York in his era -- one of them, Sullivan and Cromwell, continues today -- but he always remained supportive of the poor who could not afford to retain an attorney for legal assistance. In his honor, the Sullivan Fountain was erected in Van Cortlandt...
