An 18 Carat Royal Bracelet with the initials WE in diamond and sapphire
About the Item
An 18 carat yellow gold bracelet of large twisted gold wire with a removable applique with the initials "WE" in sapphire and diamond. With the use of a separate brooch frame, the applique can also be worn as a brooch secured with a small screw. The bracelet was designed by As. Bonebakker & Zoon, and made by with their master mark: Firma van den Eersten & Hofmeijer, in its original case.

The bracelet was originally a gift from Queen Regent Emma and Queen Wilhelmina. They went on a tour of the 11 Dutch provinces in between 1891-1896, with the purpose of allowing Wilhelmina to get acquainted with her land and her people in order to prepare herself for taking office as reigning monarch in 1898. During these province visits the two continuously stayed in the house of the commissioner of the queen- a matter which had to be prepared quite some time in advance, and certainly caused some headaches for the lady of the house who would have worried about the arrivals. As a thank you for the hospitality they gifted the lady of the house a priceless bracelet with their initials.
In total it seems that six women received a bracelet in this model, Bonebakker made three bracelets with rubies and three with sapphires. When two provinces were visited in a row, one lady was given a bracelet with sapphire, and the other with ruby.
A fun detail about this bracelet is that it was in the news on various occasions. The Dutch newspaper ‘het Algemeen Handelsbad’ of 5 september 1895 reads ‘Mrs Lycklama received a beautiful gold bracelet from Her Majesties as a souvenir initials W. and E. applied to it’ in a report of the province visit to Overijsel. Also the provincial ‘Drentsche en Asser Courant’ wrote on the 7th of september 1895: ‘The wife of Commissioner of the Queen in Overijssel, Ms. Lucklama á Nijeholt, received a beautiful bracelet, decorated with diamonds, of which part can be secured as a brooch, as thank you from the Queen.
