Jewelry in the Victorian era was made and worn on a grand scale. Massive tiaras and corsage ornaments adorned the body amongst elaborate silks and brocades. It was an era of glamour and opulence and no more so than in nineteenth century England. It is a testament to great design that many of these pieces transfer to contemporary life, although they may be worn alone with great simplicity their dramatic impact endures.
This remarkable amethyst and diamond bangle combines typical Victorian design of foliate sprays and clusters with large sways of color along side wonderful technical craftsmanship and that brings it to a sculptural form.
The bracelet belonged to Mary Russell the Duchess of Bedford.
Born as Mary du Caurroy Tribe, the daughter of Walter Harry Tribe, Anglican Archdeacon of Lahore . On January 31, 1888, she married Lord Herbrand Russell at Barrackpore, India.
In 1928 she became Duchess of Bedford as well as Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire in 1928. She was invested as a Dame of Grace, Venerable Order of Saint John of Jerusalem. She was invested as a Fellow, Linnean Society of the Imperial College.
She was an active and vocal supporter of the suffragette movement and used tax resistance as a way of protest. She was also a pioneer in aviation and broke record flights to India and South Africa.
Dame Mary died in 1937, aged 71, after leaving Woburn Abbey in a De Havilland Gipsy Moth plane, which crashed into the North Sea; her body was never recovered.
