Amber Cuff in Elaborate Art Nouveau Style Silver Setting

About the Item

The only difference between this beguiling circa 1980s piece from Poland and an Art Nouveau creation are pages from a calendar. A striking bracelet cuff, it is everything Art Nouveau strove to be: a back-turn on technology and a return to the organic, the hand-crafted, the natural. This Baltic amber cuff bracelet is a study in natural beauty and form. A pair of hand-carved carved lilies—unless they're Angel’s Trumpets—decorate each shoulder along with a very realistic leaf and elaborate curlicue escroll work that looks like several musical notes fell atop each other and became tangled. Around the back is a bar hinge making it easy to slip the bracelet on or off. The silver has attained a striking patina that emphasizes the line work. But the real star of the show is up front: a mesmerizing and huge (nearly 2" x 1.5") nugget of unprocessed royal Baltic amber that is so rich with inclusions and fascinating details it could literally save your sanity during a boring meeting. One discreet glance at your wrist and you will be transfixed. The amber displays a golden-yellow color that glows even on overcast days. It has a very good, soft polish. One one of the pictures you'll see what might look like a chip near the edge of the silver bezel which secures the amber stone in place: this is no chip but rather a natural indentation of the amber itself and the designer positioned it near the very edge to minimize it. The workmanship on this piece is exquisite. Great care and attention to detail was put into the fabrication of this one-of-a-kind piece. According to a recent issue of New Scientist, the amber market is on fire. People have finally (re)discovered this amazing organic primordial gem. No other gemstone—not rubies or pearls, neither emeralds nor opals—has quite the story to tell that amber has with its myriad of trapped-in-time inclusions. It is beautiful and fascinating at the same time. If that describes you, maybe this belongs to you. The cuff has an inner circumference 6.25", so it would fit a small to medium wrist and could not be resized.
