About the Item
In 1981 Robert Lee Morris won the Coty award for his jewelry collection for Calvin Klein and woke the fashion industry up to his high energy presence. He introduced an entirely new color pallet for fashion jewelry by mixing green verdigris, ruddy red copper, matte 24k gold and blackened brass, for a collection the Calvin produced based on the colors and patterns of the Maasai tribe in Africa. This spectacular cuff was created by taking a piece of warmed wax sheet and pressing it onto the side of an antique Japanese teakettle. The pattern of bumps is exactly what the teakettle imparted and captured in copper. Then through a process of polishing and heat, the ruddy red copper oxide is formed that is a totally permanent finish. While copper that is cast as this cuff is, is a bit brittle and should not b e opened or squeezed with danger of causing mini cracks in the metal, the size is perfect for a normal size woman's wrist. The fabulous coloration of the piece is essential Wabi Sabi.
Wabi Sabi is the Japanese term that means aged, used, worn, filled with character and spirit through use, old, spirited, and Robert Lee Morris loves it. So much of his jewelry has the Wabi Sabi quality, which is the opposite of glitz and sparkly bling so associated with jewelry in the first place. Morris spent 4 years living in Japan as a child, his father a USAF officer and pilot, and was very inspired by the beauty of traditional Japanese aesthetic and culture. Therefore one can see this exemplified in the colors of the metal and materials he uses; tarnished and oxidized brass, copper bronze and sometimes even darkened silver.
