About the Item

Day-like brightness suddenly filled the nightly ballrooms of 19th century Europe, first with the introduction of gas and then of electric light. Faint, yellow candlelight was a thing of the past – and unsurprisingly, jewellery followed suit, evolving in order to withstand this new illumination, and to glisten and glimmer ever more brightly in the new white light. White jewels, lavishly set with diamonds in silver or platinum-on-gold, responded to modern lighting conditions and replaced previous, more colourful designs. The bracelet at hand, too, is dedicated to this fashion, celebrating the idea of white jewellery by showcasing its various facets. A large, natural baroque pearl is set in the centre, presenting us with the softest version of white through its creamy texture and iridescent pink lustre. Eight large, old-cut diamonds totalling about 3.96 ct –each separate one weighing about half carat – are set on either side of the pearl, their striking brilliance revealing a glistening, cooler nuance of white. Platinum, applied to the surface of the gold bracelet, adds its metallic shine into this symphony of whites. The diamonds used in this piece may date to an even earlier period than the bracelet itself, being as they are cut in the so-called old mine cut which predominantly characterises diamonds of the mid-19th century. It is likely that they were once part of an older piece, since it was still quite common to melt down old, unfashionable pieces and rework the precious gems into new creations at the beginning of the 20th century – after all, the most fashionable jewels demanded diamonds, and lots of them. Sometime around 1910, the diamonds became part of the present piece – highly fashionable at the time of its creation, yet classic and timeless today.
