About the Item

Untreated sapphires are a rarity in the world of fine jewellery: most sapphires have been heat-treated or filled to achieve the colour and transparency which they are loved for. These three sapphires, however, show a sublime blue colour and beautiful transparency that are completely natural in origin. Their untreated state has also been certified by a renowned gemological institute. Traditionally, blue sapphires have often adorned gifts of love. „Sapphire is truth, and I am never without it“, wrote famed symbolist painter Edward Burne-Jones to his beloved friend Frances Graham. Indeed, the association of blue sapphires with truth and fidelity has made them a popular gemstone to be featured in romantic gifts; a dimension that is often added to through diamonds, which are associated with eternity due to their great hardness. Napoleon, for instance, gave his Joséphine a blue sapphire and diamond engagement ring. The blue sapphires and diamonds in this bracelet have been set into massive platinum, at the time of its making the most precious metal known, and many times more expensive than gold. Usually, only thin layers of platinum would be laid onto gold to achieve the then-fashionable white look; to set gemstones into massive platinum meant a lavish expense that certainly suggests a custom order, and also bears witness to the precious nature of the sapphires. White jewels set with diamonds and one type of coloured gemstone were a particular fashion of the early 20th century. It is in very good condition.
