About

Pygmy Seahorse Bracelet . Sea Life Series, 2020. Handcrafted. One-of-a-kind sculptural jewelry. Inspired by the universe under the sea. Made from polymer clay, resin, pigments, reflective glass beads, mini rhinestones, glass globes. Designed and Created by Caroline Gomes in California ARTIST BIOGRAPHY Carolina Gomes is a contemporary jeweler, BA in graphic design from UEMG ( State University of Minas Gerais/Brazil), born in Brazil (1986) and currently living in San Francisco/CA. Inspiring people through creations is what drives her. In spite of quite troubled childhood and adolescence. she was at the same time immersed in the universe of arts. Therefore, creativity for her, is a force that cures, brings meaning, reinvents, and moves people forward. Since 2017, her focus has been art jewelry. ARTIST STATEMENT I am inspired by nature, memories, emotions and a poetic approach of existence. Life is not flat, it is not unanimous, it is not homogeneous. Life is much more about movement, perspectives, points of view, asymmetric balances, coexistence. Looking at different viewpoints always broadens the vision of the whole. The jewelry I create is an invitation to be curious, imaginative, to appreciate life and its diversity. I want to instigate people to perform and experience themselves in a bold and creative way. Among my basic values are respect for diversity, freedom of being, empathy, self-knowledge and the transforming power of art. SEA LIFE SERIES Sea Life, my current ongoing series, is inspired by marine life. I grew up in a coastal city in Brazil where I developed a strong connection with the sea. It represents for me an affective memory of peace as opposed to my complicated childhood and adolescence. I am enchanted by all the complexity of life there, its mechanisms and diversity. The choice of the aquatic universe is also in parallel with our own. A physical land vs water and a philosophical parallel. Often what is so different or unknown is made invisible or even destroyed. The reality is that existence is a connected system on many levels. If we look from the outside, it can be just a huge abyss away from us. However, if we dive into it, we can get close and see an entire universe out there. From the precious inspiration of nature, I create wearable sculptures as a way to awaken in people an admiration for life. I embody these ideas in my jewellery through the profusion of perspectives, organic forms, asymmetric balances, multiplicity of colors, shapes and textures. All jewels are unique pieces, produced on a small scale, handmade by me. Currently, I have been working mainly with polymer clay, resin, pigments, and metals. ______________________________________ This piece is part of the NYCJW HERE WE ARE Marketplace.
