About the Item
Three violet purple star sapphire high-dome oval cabochons that transition from transparent to opaque are bezel set in this antique white-gold chain link tennis bracelet made during the Belle-Epoque-meets-Art-Deco period. The lavender hues in natural indoor light and velvety asterism arise in the 8mm-high "glass body" domes of the trapiche-like sapphires within the 17mm-long by 9mm-wide bezels, which have delicate serration at the top and open backs like some antique Faberge settings. As other desirable natural inclusions of unheated sapphires, several zircon crystals seem to be present in transparent areas. Minute scratches on the gems can only be seen with a loupe.
In addition to the textured thick-ring white gold links, the four long double-bar links are decorated in fine detail to depict four flower-head squares in the center bracketed by foliage-branch rectangles. The elegant bracelet fastens with a spring-ring clasp, which helps to date it. As the bracelet was created around WWI when white gold was first widely used for jewelry, there is patina caused by the aged palladium mixture of nickel, zinc and copper. There is no discernible maker's mark.
Our photos taken with circle-shaped lights in a studio can been seen in the violet-hue sapphire reflections. The last three photos, as well as the primary image, where the gems are degrees of vivid violet were taken of the entire bracelet in bright sunlight, which created dark shadows on the white tabletop surface.
