Friedrich Knupper : Postmodern 'Grid' Silver Brooch Patinated silver, red lacquered steel, brass (screws) Length 6 cm, width 6 cm (approx. 2 3/8" to 2 3/8") Marks: 'F. Knupper 4/5 81' (engraved by hand); maker’s mark and silver content mark '925' (stamped) Germany, 1981 After first experiments with flexible grids Knupper turned to more solid perforated silver plates. Less flexible in material they gave him greater flexibility for his designs as they needed no frame to keep them from fringing. In 1981 he published the matching wall object to the brooch on offer in the 'Goldschmiedezeitung' (vol. 6/1981, p.64). According to Knupper's marks on the back the brooch is the fourth of a series of five identical pieces made by him in 1981. Friedrich Knupper (1947 – 1987) born 1947 in Hamburg, Germany 1963 – 1966 apprenticeship as a goldsmith in Hamburg 1966 – 1971 working in Hamburg and Berlin 1971 exam as a master craftsman in Berlin 1974 setting up his own workshop in Berlin Friend and colleague of Georg Dobler and Carl Friedrich Dau 1980 founding of the Gallery „Kunsthandwerk Berlin“ („Applied Arts Berlin“) together with Georg Dobler, Carl Friedrich Dau, Ute Hoinkis, Traudel and Anderl Kammermeier, Werner Reister, Gisela Seibert-Philippen and Sibylle Voormann (see Joppien, Rüdiger: Georg Dobler Schmuck //Jewellery 1980-2010, Stuttgart 2010, p. 54) In search of new materials and a new way of expression in jewellery Knupper starts to experiment with grids at the end of the 1970s, aiming at a higher complexity without destroying the primary structures of the grid. “… Knupper was one of the first jewellery designers in Germany who utilized constructional-geometric, threedimensional forms methodically for jewellery design.” (see Joppien, Rüdiger: Friedrich Knupper.
