Antique Aluminium Jet Brooch
About the Item
Striking Victorian Whitby jet and aluminium pin. This unique piece combines two of its period's most interesting materials. Whitby jet is a natural substance that is mined and then hand carved into jewelry and other objects. Aluminum was first made into jewelry in the mid 1800's and was treasured by the wealthy. Black jewelry was required at Victoria's court after the death of her beloved Albert and became popular throughout the Empire. What better than to wear a beautiful brooch combining the two. The pin measures 2" in diameter and 1/2" deep.
