Provenance:
Augusta Crichton-Stuart by her husband John, 4th Marquis of Bute.
Augusta Mary Monica Crichton-Stuart, Marchioness of Bute, was a daughter of Sir Alan Henry Bellingham, 4th Baronet and Lady Constance Julia Eleanor Georgiana Noel, daughter of the 2nd Earl of Gainsborough.
She married John Crichton-Stuart, 4th Marquis of the County of Bute, son of John Patrick Crichton-Stuart, 3rd Marquis of the County of Bute and Hon. Gwendolen Mary Anne Fitzalan-Howard, on 6 July 1905 in Castle Bellingham, Kilsaran County Louth Ireland.
After her marriage Augusta Bellingham was styled as Marchioness of Bute and her married name became Crichton-Stuart. She and her husband had seven children.
The title Marquis of Bute was created in 1796 for John Stuart, the 1st Marquis, who had previously been titled John Stuart, 4th Earl of Bute. His father, the 3rd Earl of Bute, also John, was Prime Minister of Great Britain from 1762-63. The Stuart line descends a further 450 years through the Stuarts of Ardmaleish and Kilcattan, to Robert Stuart, 7th High Steward of Scotland, who became King Robert II of Scotland, in 1371. Robert was the grandson of King Robert the Bruce, who defeated the English at the Battle of Bannockburn, in 1314, after the death of William Wallace.
