About the Item

Unheated gemstones are rarities on today's market, making this 11.8 carat blue Ceylon sapphire in its artful Belle Époque setting a veritable jewel. The quality of the natural sapphire shows in its high transparency as well as in its vivid natural colour. Gemstones such as this one are not merely serendipitous finds, but likewise guarantee stable values due to their quality and rarity. This particular example, most likely mined in former Ceylon - then a Crown colony of the British Empire - inspired a maker of fine jewellery to turn it into this brooch in the years around 1890. The intense blue sapphire in a combined star and step cut in a cushion shape is at the centre of the design, surrounded by a halo of fine old mine cut diamonds whose own cushion shape mirrors that of the central gemstone. Overall 106 diamonds in historical cut enliven the design with its ornamental lines and curves. Typical of its time, the brooch is made of silver on gold. As white gold had not yet been invented and platinum was only very scarcely used at the time of its making, silver was the material of choice to present fine white diamonds without tinting them, as gold would. Ever since it was made at the high period of the British Empire, the brooch has been excellently preserved in what is likely its original box by jeweler J. Lewis of the seaside town Margate in Kent, England. It will be delivered with the independent certificate of a renowned German gemological lab.
