About the Item

One of the things about antique jewellery that never ceases to amaze us is the thought that the pieces we offer were around when events of political or cultural significance took place. In the 1920s, when this brooch was made, the role of women changed rapidly – and after hard, ongoing fights for women’s votes and rights, fashion finally caught on as well. The fashion of the inter-war era was modern and wearable, it allowed more unrestricted movement along with the freedom to express a new and confident self-image. More specifically, the brooch was made around the time at which Virginia Woolf published her novel Mrs. Dalloway, 1925. The experimental novel deals with the thoughts and actions of a small circle of people in the course of one Wednesday in June. Woolf was inspired to write it through her acquaintance with Lady Ottoline Morrell, an aristocrat and patron of the arts. Morrell was a member of the Bloomsbury Group and fascinated her contemporaries with her wits and extravagant style. With pleasure, the members of the group followed her invitation to meet in her house at Bedford Square, Thursdays at ten: both D. H. Lawrence and Winston Churchill were at one point guests at her salon. Isn’t it wonderful to think that the brooch was made as all this was happening? In true keeping with the spirit of the times, the design merges modernism and luxurious elegance. A South American emerald is the centre of the brooch, flanked by natural pearls and large diamonds. The precious gems are set in white gold, a new metal at the time, which itself is covered in an additional layer of platinum. The aesthetic is an airy yet geometrical one that leaves the darkness and heaviness of the 19th century behind. Thus, the brooch reflects the image of the new woman: confident, modern and with an eye on the latest developments, without ever sacrificing quality and style. MATERIALS A natural emerald, step cut, approx. 0,80 ct, 4,7 x 5,9 x 4,2 mm 52 diamonds, old European cut, 8/8 cut and rose cut, approx. 2,24 ct altogether, Nearly Colourless (Top Wesselton, G) – Faint (Cape, M), si–pi 24 natural pearls, diameter 1,9 – 3,0 mm White gold 750/000, resp. 18 Karat The front of platinum 950/000 HALLMARKS Standard mark „750” on the pin CERTIFICATE Delivery with detailed independent certificate of the DEGEB (Deutsche Gesellschaft fuer Edelsteinbewertung/German Association for Gemstone Evaluation) in Idar-Oberstein dated 27.03.2018.
