Daniel Brush Bakelite, Black Diamond, Emerald Panther Brooch

$18,000

About

•A carved yellow Bakelite panther brooch whimsically speckled with circular-cut black diamond spots and emerald eyes; with steel and magnet closure • 253 fancy black full-cut diamonds • Signed “DB” on the reverse, signed “Daniel Brush” on the “La Ménagerie Magnétique” card Daniel Brush’s aesthetic is based on a rare combination of scholarship, creativity, and craftsmanship. With painstaking tenacity, Brush has pushed the limits of what is possible in painting, sculpture, and jewelry creation. The La Ménagerie Magnétique collection comprises a series of animal brooches made out of nontraditional jewelry materials including vulcanized rubber and Bakelite set with diamonds. In the August 2006 issue of Solitaire, Brush explained, “I like the mixture of high and low, like Van Cleef & Arpels and Woolworth’s.” Brush places value on color and texture, rather than on the market value of the precious materials. The playful mixture of nontraditional materials combined with gemstones was the first step in creating something unique. Brush carefully considered the technical aspect of the brooches. As an alternative to the conventional manner of securing a brooch to clothing by a pin, Brush devised an ingenious magnet clasp, enabling the brooch to be attached to fabric without creating holes. Leather, a material that defied the wearing of traditional brooches, could accommodate his animals. For Brush, the entire work, whether a painting, sculpture, or jewel, must be finished to the exacting standard he sets. When creating the animals in La Ménagerie Magnétique, he did not want any visible metal. From his metalwork experience, he adapted a technique for securely setting diamonds into Bakelite without the use of traditional prongs—a painstaking process characteristic of his work. This brooch of a panther recumbent on a branch is based on Cartier’s iconic panther created by the designer Peter Lemarchand in collaboration with Jeanne Toussaint. The panther slouches on a branch with two legs hanging down, perhaps resting after a hunt and enjoying the sun. Brush playfully reinterprets the Cartier standard by creating the creature out of carved Bakelite and using black diamonds as the spots. Brush’s technical ability and the playfulness of mixing high and low materials create a clever, important, and highly wearable jewel. Literature cf. Brush, Daniel. Daniel Brush: Thirty Years’ Work.
